Favorite Reading Places

It is a glorious early autumn day in Columbus–a day to be out enjoying the crystal clear blue sky, the air with a tinge of autumn crispness and the warm but not torridly hot day. So for most of us, it us not the place to curl up with a good book.

But those days are coming and I thought I’d reflect on some of my favorite places to read.

1.  Anywhere in our family room, usually listening to some great music.  All the chairs are comfortable.

2.  In the mornings in my wife’s glider-rocker in the living room–good light, usually a cup of coffee at my side.

3.  At night in bed, usually reading something on my Kindle so I don’t need to fuss with pages.  Usually this doesn’t last long before I doze off–usually how long I read is a good gauge of how riveting is the book.

4.  Sometimes if I have a break on campus at Ohio State I enjoy reading at Browning Amphitheatre on the South Oval–a favorite spot for many students to read.

5.  More often than not, I “snatch read” in one of the many coffee shops around campus. I used to like to get away some times to the Caribou shop on Tremont in Upper Arlington. Alas, it is closed having sold out to another chain.

6.  If I want to feel really studious, I will try to find a place in the East Reading Room of Thompson Library at Ohio State.  A classic reading room!

7.  The seminary library at the College of St Mary of the Lake in Mundelein.  Gorgeous classical library, quiet atmosphere.  Our organization has meetings there at least once a year.

8.  Our local library, the Northwest Library on Hard Road.  There are some comfortable chairs in the fireplace area that are best for reading and away from all the computer equipment, which has taken the place of some of the stacks.

9.  Almost anywhere with decent light, a comfortable chair, and good coffee!

Where do you like to curl up with a good book?
